The day of the feast finally arrived with unnaturally cool weather. Some years here in Santa Barbara we are tempted to have a BBQ so this chilly air with threatening skies made for a classical Winter mood. Through a handsome freshly festooned portal, guests filtered into the candlelit room, now almost 200 years old. Magical anytime but more that evening because all the richness of harvest tables gone by was laid out to accompany the intoxicating perfume of a beautiful bird baking in the oven. We began with some luxurious bubbly along with nibbles.
The early preparations...included polishing all the silver (sigh) and bringing out all the best family heirlooms including Mother's beautiful white & gold Aynsley bone china from England. We put little notes in each piece that described the contents.
Grandma Jones' Festive Carnival Glass bowl...
The exquisite crystal stems by Baccarat...These lovely glasses have an amazing story! Each hock wine glass is set upon a cut crystal diamond. Many years ago, when I was working at Geary's, the famous China, Crystal & Silver store in Beverly Hills, the Shaw of Iran often ordered crystal goblets for his parties from Baccarat in Paris. Each one was to be monogrammed with his crest in gold but in one shipment all the hock wines arrived plain? So instead of shipping them back, they were put on sale and I bought one dozen and have loved them for over thirty years.
By popular demand... we made Indian Corn Gingerbread Cookies again. You can find the directions for these right here on jefferson's Table.
